  • How do virtual custom experiences work?
Virtual custom experiences work the same way as in-person custom experiences, just virtually! Find out more on my custom page.
  • How long do custom pieces take to create?
Generally, you can expect a lead time of 8-12 weeks. The time it takes to create a custom piece can vary depending on the complexity of the design, the materials used, and how long it takes to finalize a design. However, if you have a specific deadline in mind, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your request. Rest assured that you will be kept updated on the progress of your piece every step of the way.
  • What happens if a custom piece is delayed?
In the event of a delay, our team will communicate transparently with you to provide updates on the status of your custom piece. • Can I come to you with my own gems?
Yes, absolutely! I offer custom jewelry design services that include using gems provided by my clients. I understand that some customers may have their own sentimental heirloom stones that they would like to incorporate into their jewelry design. To ensure the safety of your precious gem during the manufacturing process, it is crucial that your gemstone has prior certification or an appraisal. This certification or appraisal is necessary for insuring your gem throughout the creation of the piece. Unfortunately, without a valid certification or appraisal, we won't be able to insure your gem. If we are collaborating on a project virtually, I will assist you in purchasing a shipping label at a reduced commercial rate to securely ship your precious gem to me using FedEx, with added insurance. Rest assured I have never lost a gem with FedEx.
  • What happens if a gem is damaged during the production process?
If a gem we provide is damaged, not to worry – we've got it covered with our insurance, and we'll promptly replace it. While it's incredibly rare, we understand that accidents can happen, and gems may experience minor issues during the setting process. For gems you provide, we recommend insurance before we begin any work. This step is just a precaution, and while we haven't encountered many issues, it's a safety net for unexpected situations. If you decide not to insure your gem, please be aware that any potential damages would be your responsibility. We're here to guide you through the process and make sure your custom jewelry experience is as smooth as possible.
  • What is your return policy on your custom pieces?
For custom pieces, we do not accept returns. At Sjarif Studios, we're dedicated to crafting one-of-a-kind, personalized jewelry tailored to your unique tastes. Each creation is special, crafted exclusively for you, and we ensure meticulous attention to detail to meet your expectations. In the rare event of any issues with craftsmanship or quality, rest assured, I'm here to make it right. I take pride in the quality of my work and strive for your complete satisfaction with your purchase. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to get in touch. I'm always available to assist you in any way possible.
  • Can you provide an appraisal for my custom piece?
Certainly! If you're buying a gem through us, or if you bring in a certified gem, I'll happily provide a complimentary appraisal. However, for custom pieces with uncertified gems that are client provided, an extra fee will be applied as I'll need to consult a gemologist for appraisal.
  • How are buffalo horn/bone jewelry made?
Each piece of our buffalo horn/bone jewelry undergoes a meticulous creation process that spans several weeks. It begins with the sourcing of the material, followed by the sanitation and preparation of the horn or bone. These initial steps are crucial in ensuring the quality and suitability of the material for carving. When it comes to carving, we pride ourselves on working with expert artisans who have over 20+ years of experience due to our rigorous quality control process. Despite the small size of these pieces, the intricate nature of the designs and the natural characteristics of buffalo horn/bone require considerable time and skill. On average, an artisan can typically carve around only 3-4 pieces of bone/horn jewelry per day, ensuring attention to detail and craftsmanship. We believe that the time invested in each piece reflects the dedication to quality and the creation of unique, handcrafted jewelry that you can cherish.
  • What is buffalo horn/bone jewelry?
Buffalo horn/bone jewelry refers to pieces made from the horn or bone of a buffalo, which is a strong and durable material. It is often carved or shaped into various designs and combined with metals like sterling silver or 24k gold vermeil to create unique pieces.
  • Is buffalo horn/bone jewelry ethical?
Yes, Sjarif Studios buffalo horn/bone is sourced responsibly. We ensure that our sourcing process aligns with our commitment to our sustainability ethos. These materials are obtained through partnerships with food production facilities, allowing us to repurpose a significant portion of the animal that would otherwise go to waste.
  • How is buffalo horn/bone sanitized before it is used in jewelry?
Every bone and horn we receive undergoes a meticulous sanitation and preparation process to ensure their suitability for carving. This involves cleaning, sterilizing, and treating the material to eliminate any potential bacteria or impurities.
  • How should I care for my buffalo horn/bone jewelry?
To ensure the longevity of your buffalo horn/bone jewelry, it is important to follow a few care guidelines. Firstly, keep your jewelry away from direct sunlight and store it in a cool and dark place, such as a jewelry box or the bamboo packaging it arrived in. This helps prevent any potential discoloration or damage caused by prolonged exposure to light and heat. Secondly, gently wipe your jewelry with a soft cloth to remove any sweat, oils, or creams that may accumulate over time. This helps maintain its luster and cleanliness. Avoid submerging the jewelry in water or exposing it to harsh chemicals. Additionally, please note that buffalo horn may exhibit a slight memory of its last form. As buffalo horn naturally comes curved and is treated with heat to become straight, it may gradually return to a slightly curved shape over time. This is a characteristic of the material and adds to its unique charm. Please refer back to the care sheet that will come with each purchase from Sjarif Studios.
  • Is buffalo horn/bone jewelry durable?
Yes, buffalo horn/bone jewelry is known for its durability. It is a resilient material that can withstand everyday wear. However, like any jewelry, it is advisable to handle it with care and avoid exposing it to harsh chemicals or extreme temperatures.
  • Will the silver and gold vermeil used in the jewelry tarnish over time? What can be done to maintain their appearance?
Over time, it is natural for the silver used in our jewelry to develop a subtle tarnish, and the gold vermeil may gradually rub off in areas that experience friction, such as the top of earring rings. We embrace the concept of wabi-sabi, where the beauty of imperfection and the evolving nature of materials are celebrated. The silver may develop a charming patina that adds character to the piece, while the gold vermeil may transform into a beautiful soft yellow hue with wear. This notion of impermanence is also reflected in the intricate Patra Cina pattern that adorns our earrings, as each piece tells a unique story. However, if the tarnishing or changes in appearance bother you, we provide a polishing cloth with each purchase of our earrings. Gently polishing the jewelry with the cloth can help restore its original shine and luster, allowing you to enjoy its pristine beauty. We believe that the evolving nature of our jewelry, influenced by wabi-sabi and the Patra Cina pattern, mirrors the essence of life's impermanence, where the passage of time brings forth a unique story and adds to its inherent beauty.
